Canada Reports Major Immigration Declines for 2026

As of June 2026, Canada has reported a significant decrease in immigration figures, with international student arrivals dropping by 73%, worker arrivals by 44%, and asylum claims by 68% compared to June 2024. This decline is attributed to a deliberate policy shift by the Government of Canada, responding to public concerns over the strain on housing, healthcare, and public services.

In 2024, Ottawa introduced a cap on study permits and tightened eligibility rules for international students, including stricter financial requirements. Changes to temporary foreign worker and open work permit streams have also led to reduced worker numbers.

The government has implemented border enforcement measures and bilateral agreements to manage irregular crossings, particularly with the United States, contributing to the decline in asylum claims. Despite these reductions, officials assert that Canada remains on track to meet its annual targets for permanent resident categories.

The Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) is also set to propose changes to the Express Entry category-based selection for 2027.
