Matthew Ndagoso Elected President of Catholic Bishops Conference

Archbishop Matthew Ndagoso of the Catholic Archdiocese of Kaduna has been elected as the new president of the Catholic Bishops Conference of Nigeria (CBCN). His election took place during the first plenary meeting held in Abuja, where he succeeded Archbishop Lucius Ugorji of Owerri, whose four-year term expired in February.

The announcement was made on Tuesday by Michael Banjo, the Secretary General of the Catholic Secretariat of Nigeria. Alongside Ndagoso, other newly elected officials include Archbishop Alfred Martin Lago as Vice President, Bishop Peter Odetoyinbo of Abeokuta as Secretary, and Bishop Peter Chukwu of Abakaliki as Assistant Secretary.

The newly elected officials are tasked with overseeing various directorates and departments within the Catholic Secretariat of the CBCN. The conference has requested prayers for the new leadership as they embark on their responsibilities over the next four years, focusing on spiritual leadership, social engagement, and serving as a moral voice within the broader Nigerian society.
