Nigeria's Oluwafemiayo Wins Gold at Commonwealth Games

At the Commonwealth Games, Nigerian powerlifter Oluwafemiayo won gold in the +86kg category, breaking the world record twice during her performance. She began by lifting 186 kg, setting a new Commonwealth record, and later achieved a historic 175 kg lift, becoming the first para-athlete to do so.

Oluwafemiayo finished with a total of 134.8 points, the highest ever in her category. Her compatriot, Rita Ferdinand, also excelled, winning silver in the +79kg category by lifting 158 kg, which surpassed the previous world record of 154 kg held by China’s Han Miayou.

This achievement marked Nigeria's second gold medal on the first full day of the Commonwealth Games, with both medals won by female athletes. Overall, Nigeria has secured two gold and three silver medals, totaling five medals on this day.
