Adamawa Government Addresses Market Shop Allocation Issues

The Adamawa State Government has initiated measures to address alleged irregularities in the allocation of shops at the Modibbo Adama Modern Market, Yola, which was commissioned by Governor Ahmadu Fintiri on July 14. This market was constructed to replace the old Yola Market, demolished after multiple fire incidents.

Complaints have emerged from prospective shop owners, particularly concerning the allocation process, with claims that former shop owners were overlooked. Chief Joab Sahma, the Commissioner for Commerce, Trade and Industries, accused market union leaders of manipulating the beneficiary list by including individuals who never owned shops in the old market.

The government directed union leaders to compile a list of former shop owners, resulting in a total of 350 allocations, including 47 additional beneficiaries. However, some genuine former owners remain without shops due to the inclusion of ineligible persons.

A verification committee has been established to investigate these allegations, and Sahma warned against fraudsters exploiting shop seekers.
