Anambra Government Dismantles Illegal Structures in Markets

The Anambra State Government has intensified its urban renewal campaign by dismantling illegal structures at Onitsha Main Market and other strategic locations across the state. This enforcement operation was initiated after the expiration of statutory notices served to traders and occupants of unauthorized developments.

The operation, led by Mr. Chijioke Ojukwu, the Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development, was conducted peacefully with the support of security personnel.

Ojukwu emphasized that the government had exhausted all lawful approaches before resorting to demolition, aiming to reclaim public spaces and improve the trading environment. The operation also targeted illegal lock-up shops and roadside structures along New Market Road in Onitsha South LGA, as well as similar actions in Nkwelle Ezunaka and Trans Nkisi Phase Two Layout.

Chief Humphrey Anuna, President-General of AMATA, commended the government's decision, noting that illegal structures had hindered movement and accessibility in the market.
