13-Year Delay in Lagos Shop Looting Case Raises Concerns

The prosecution of a shop looting case in Lagos has faced a 13-year delay, raising significant concerns. The case, involving allegations against certain individuals for unlawfully entering a shop at No. 1 Adelabu Street, Surulere, and damaging property while removing goods, dates back to April 20, 2012.

The police arraigned the defendants on May 30, 2012, with four counts related to unlawful interference with property. The trial has experienced numerous adjournments, with the first ruling delivered on March 20, 2013, by Magistrate Hon.

Adeola Adedayo, who directed the defendants to respond to the charges. The case was reassigned on May 28, 2015, to Magistrate Hon.

In 2016, the Chief Judge of Lagos State directed an accelerated hearing. Despite legal advice from the Lagos State Director of Public Prosecution on August 13, 2013, the case remains unresolved, with the next court sitting scheduled for October 9, 2025.

The Director of Public Prosecution, Dr. Babajid Martin, declined to comment on the matter.
