Nigerians Demand Affordable Cooking Gas Amid Price Drop

Many Nigerians are lamenting the high costs associated with liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), commonly known as cooking gas, despite a recent price drop. Current prices range from N1,250 to N1,650 per kilogram, with 5kg cylinders costing between N6,250 and N8,250, and 12.5kg cylinders priced at N15,625 to N20,625.

Although prices have stabilized after a sharp increase earlier in the year, when LPG reached nearly N2,000 per kilogram in some areas of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), residents argue that the reductions have not made cooking gas affordable for low- and middle-income families. Public servant Innocent Emmanuel and resident Elizabeth Tanko emphasized the need for stable pricing, while businesswoman Zainab Isiaka noted the financial strain on families.

Minister of State for Petroleum Resources (Gas), Ekperikpe Ekpo, had previously ordered a clampdown on LPG marketers accused of market manipulation. The NMDPRA cited global supply disruptions and local production issues as contributing factors to the price volatility.
