ICPC Chairman Aliyu: Corruption is Nigeria's Top Challenge

Dr Musa Adamu Aliyu, SAN, the Chairman of the Independent Corrupt Practices and other related offences Commission (ICPC), declared that corruption is Nigeria's most pressing issue, requiring urgent attention for the nation's progress. Speaking at a lecture in Abuja on “Anti-corruption Reforms, Economic Stability and Effective Communication,” organized by Economic Confidential, Aliyu noted that corruption is a global issue but emphasized Nigeria's significant struggles.

He recounted a major corruption case from 2012 involving $65 million intended for housing public officers, which was misappropriated. Aliyu warned that unchecked corruption deters investment, as no investor would commit to a corrupt environment.

He committed to strengthening the weak systems that hinder economic growth and addressed issues like ghost workers, revealing a discovery of N24 billion allocated for ghost workers' pensions in 2024, with one individual fraudulently enrolling 14 family members. Aliyu called for grassroots campaigns in schools to educate children on the dangers of corruption.
