Court Bars Journalists from Covering Coup Plot Trial

A federal court in Abuja has prohibited journalists from covering the trial of six alleged coup plotters, including former Bayelsa State Governor Timipre Sylva. The court's decision, communicated by unidentified officials, led to the immediate removal of journalists from the courtroom shortly after Justice Abdulmalik took his seat.

The defendants, who were arraigned last Wednesday, face 13 counts, including treason and terrorism, related to an alleged conspiracy to overthrow the Nigerian government in 2025. The defendants, including retired military personnel and a civilian, have pleaded not guilty.

The court has scheduled a hearing for their bail application on April 27, and the defendants are currently remanded in the custody of the Department of State Services (DSS). Reports indicate that at least 40 suspects, including 36 military officers, have been arrested in connection with the alleged plot.
