Native Doctor Sentenced to Six Years for Fraud in Anambra

Onyebuchi Okocha, popularly known as Onyez Jesu, was sentenced to six years in prison and fined ₦20 million by the Anambra State High Court in Awka on February 2025. Justice Jude Obiora delivered the judgment, finding Okocha guilty on three charges related to promoting wealth through supernatural means and misleading the public via social media.

The court ruled that Okocha had admitted to owning an account that promoted claims of possessing supernatural powers capable of making people wealthy. However, he was discharged on two counts due to insufficient evidence regarding allegations of ritual killings and money-doubling practices.

Okocha, who broke down in tears during the proceedings, pleaded for leniency, citing his role as a breadwinner for his family. His lawyer, Sir Bath Okafor Ezedinobi, indicated plans to appeal the judgment.

The Anambra State Commission for Information emphasized the judgment as a strong affirmation of the state's homeland security law, which prohibits deceptive practices that mislead the public.
