Court Grants ₦50m Bail to Anambra Native Doctor Ezenagu

On June 19, 2023, Justice Jude Obiora of the Anambra State High Court in Awka granted bail to Ikechukwu Ezenagu, a native doctor known as Muomiri Afuluanya, in the sum of ₦50 million. Ezenagu was arrested on March 26, 2023, by operatives of Agunechemba, the Anambra State government's security outfit, for allegedly breaching the Anambra Homeland Security Law.

The bail conditions set by Justice Obiora include the deposit of title documents for Ezenagu's home, forfeiture of the bail amount if he jumps bail, and a prohibition on giving press interviews during the trial. Ezenagu's counsel, Kingslei Awuka, argued for bail on health grounds, stating that Ezenagu had been hospitalized since June 3, 2023.

The prosecution, led by Topechukwu Nweke, opposed the bail application, urging the court to remand Ezenagu until the bail motion was determined. The case has raised concerns regarding Ezenagu's alleged involvement in encouraging youth to engage in ritualistic practices.
