Court Delays Atiku's Suit Against Tinubu to September 2026

On Tuesday, a Federal High Court in Abuja postponed the suit filed by former Vice President Atiku Abubakar against President Bola Tinubu regarding his eligibility to participate in the 2027 Presidential election to September 28, 2026. Atiku, represented by his counsel Joseph Onu Silas, claims he has been unable to personally deliver the Originating Summons to Tinubu as required by law.

The suit names Tinubu, the All Progressives Congress (APC), and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) as defendants. Atiku seeks Tinubu's disqualification based on allegations that he submitted a forged NYSC discharge certificate to INEC, which bears the name "Tinubu Bola Adekunle," differing from his official name, Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

Atiku's affidavit requests the court to determine if the certificate belongs to Tinubu and challenges provisions of the Electoral Act, 2026, that limit who can contest a candidate's qualification at the pre-election stage.
