Court to Rule October 12 on Bid to Stop Adichie Son's Death Inquest

Lagos State High Court will deliver its ruling on October 12 on whether to stop the coroner's inquest into the death of Nkanu Adichie-Esege, son of internationally acclaimed author Chimamanda Adichie. Justice Aishat Opesanwo, sitting in Ikoyi, heard arguments from both sides on the matter before setting the date.

The inquest concerns circumstances around the boy's death on January 7, 2026, during medical procedures at Euracare Multi-Specialist Hospital. Eurapharma Care Services Nigeria Limited, which operates the hospital, filed an application seeking to halt the inquest and quash related decisions.

The hospital's legal team presented arguments supporting the halt, but details of their specific grounds were not elaborated in available reports. The application is rooted in a judicial review process.

Chimamanda Adichie and her husband, Dr Ivara Esege, have opposed the hospital's bid through their legal representative, Kemi Pinheiro (SAN). Pinheiro characterised the hospital's application as premature, contending that the coroner has not yet made any determination or ruling that can be legally challenged and overturned by the High Court.

He argued the application lacked substantive legal basis at this stage of proceedings. The couple's legal team also described them as the parties most affected by the circumstances of their son's death.

The inquest process in Lagos State permits continuation even after cremation of the deceased's remains, according to arguments presented in court. Justice Opesanwo's October 12 ruling will determine whether the coroner's investigation into the death at the facility proceeds or faces legal suspension.
