Customs Officer Paraded for Alleged Extortion in Lagos

The Nigeria Customs Service has taken disciplinary action against an officer following the circulation of a viral video that depicted alleged extortion of a motorist along the Lagos-Benin Expressway. The incident involved an officer, whose identity has not been disclosed, demanding a bribe of N200,000 from the motorist.

The video, posted on social media, shows the officer in uniform engaging with the driver regarding vehicle documentation issues dating back to 2018. The officer informed the motorist that they were liable for outstanding payments and suggested the bribe amount.

Hussaini Abdullahi, the head of the Customs Police Unit in Lagos State, addressed the matter, stating that the incident represents unprofessional conduct and reaffirmed the service's commitment to a zero-tolerance policy for misconduct. Disciplinary procedures have been initiated, and any officer found guilty of violating ethical standards will face appropriate sanctions.
