Allegations Against Bayelsa’s Only Female LG Chairperson

The Centre for Women’s Rights and Development Initiative (CWRDI) has raised concerns regarding an alleged plan to remove Hon. Mrs.

Alice Allen Tangi, the Chairperson of Sagbama Local Government Area in Bayelsa State. CWRDI's Executive Director, Dr.

Mrs. Marilyn Damian Okoro, stated that the move to suspend or remove Tangi is linked to her refusal to defect from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

The organization claims that the Bayelsa State Government, the State House of Assembly, and the legislative arm of the Sagbama Local Government Council are involved in this alleged plot. CWRDI emphasized that Tangi is the only female local government chairperson in Bayelsa and the second woman to hold such a position since Nigeria's return to democracy.

They argue that removing an elected official based on political affiliation undermines democratic governance and women's political participation. CWRDI called for adherence to constitutional provisions and urged relevant authorities to ensure Tangi's safety and uphold local government autonomy.
