INEC Orders Nationwide Verification Exercise Over Deceased Voters on Register

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Nigeria, led by Chairman Prof. Joash Amupitan, has initiated a nationwide verification exercise due to the presence of deceased individuals on the current voter register.

This exercise was prompted by the sharp contrast between the number of registered voters and actual ballots cast in Anambra State during the November governorship election. The voter register showed 2.9 million registered voters, but only 600,000 votes were cast, indicating a significant discrepancy.

INEC emphasized the importance of a clean and accurate voter register to ensure the credibility of elections in the country. The verification process aims to remove deceased persons' names, correct data errors, and enhance the overall integrity of the electoral system.
