Defence Minister Advocates for Proactive Election Security

On Tuesday, Gen. Christopher Musa (retd.), Nigeria's Minister of Defence, delivered a keynote address at a seminar organized by Blueprint newspaper, warning security agencies against relying on last-minute deployments for election security. He stated that effective election security requires months of intelligence-led planning and coordination, rather than being treated as a one-day event.

Musa highlighted the evolving nature of security threats, which now include cyber threats, misinformation, and the manipulation of ethnic and religious divisions. He proposed a six-pillar framework for strengthening election security, starting with Strategic Intelligence as the foundation, emphasizing the importance of intelligence-led operations.

The second pillar focuses on protecting digital infrastructure, while the third pillar stresses Civil-Military Coordination among security agencies. Musa underscored the need for Unified Strategic Communication as the fourth pillar, advocating for seamless collaboration among agencies to ensure effective election security.
