Australia Sets Minimum Wage for Delivery Drivers at $31.30

The Fair Work Commission (FWC) in Australia has approved a new minimum hourly rate of at least $31.30 for food and grocery delivery drivers, effective August 17. This decision follows a joint application submitted in 2024 by the Transport Workers’ Union (TWU), DoorDash, and Uber Eats after extensive negotiations.
The new standards will also provide access to workplace injury insurance for delivery workers. The agreement is expected to cover workers classified as “employee-like” and aims to create an industry-wide safety net while maintaining the flexibility of on-demand work.
TWU national secretary Michael Kaine described these protections as “world-leading.” Delivery workers will be responsible for maintaining third-party vehicle insurance, while companies must arrange personal accident insurance for their workers. The minimum rates will increase by 50 cents starting January 1, 2027, and include provisions for dispute resolution and unpaid time off.
Workplace Relations Minister Amanda Rishworth called the decision a “milestone” for gig worker protections.
