Safe Corridor Coordinator Defends 744 'Repentant Terrorists'

Brig Gen Yusuf Ali, the Safe Corridor Coordinator, addressed public backlash regarding the Nigerian government's plan to reintegrate 744 'repentant terrorists' who recently completed a deradicalization and rehabilitation program. He clarified that these individuals should not be labeled as terrorists but rather as victims of terrorism, as many were coerced into joining Boko Haram.

Ali emphasized the importance of reassessing these individuals according to international conventions on civil and political rights. He pointed out that the Ministry of Justice has confirmed that these individuals are not members of terrorist groups and have undergone extensive psychosocial therapy, drug rehabilitation, and religious reorientation.

Ali noted the success of the reintegration program, which has seen no reported issues from the 3,000 individuals reintegrated over the past decade. He urged the public to avoid negative narratives that could inadvertently aid terrorist groups and highlighted the need for a balanced approach combining kinetic and non-kinetic strategies in addressing terrorism in Nigeria.
