Lai Mohammed Advocates for Democracy at Cambridge Event

Lai Mohammed, the former Minister of Information and Culture, stated that democracy remains the best governance option despite its inherent flaws. He made this assertion during a high-level interactive session at St.

John's College, Cambridge, organized by Cambridge University and the Nigeria Society. The event gathered Nigerian students and scholars in the diaspora to discuss the state of democracy and governance in Nigeria.

Mohammed highlighted that the challenges do not stem from the principle of equal voting rights but rather from socio-economic conditions that influence voter behavior. He stressed the need to enhance access to education, healthcare, and infrastructure, particularly in underserved areas, to improve democratic outcomes.

Additionally, he pointed out that insecurity and social exclusion, partly fueled by poverty and lack of education, exacerbate these challenges. Mohammed advocated for a comprehensive approach that incorporates non-kinetic strategies for education and economic development, emphasizing the vital role of community governance in establishing trust and legitimacy between the government and citizens.
