Lagos Enhances Ebola Preparedness Amid DRC Outbreak

On September 1, the Lagos State Government announced intensified preparedness for a potential Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) outbreak, prompted by the expanding outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). As of August 31, the DRC reported 6,041 confirmed cases and 2,911 deaths, marking its largest outbreak on record.

The outbreak has affected six provinces, with Ituri Province being the epicenter, accounting for 4,802 confirmed cases. In response, Lagos State Commissioner for Health, Akin Abayomi, conducted a strategic assessment of the Infectious Disease Hospital (IDH) in Yaba on August 29.

The inspection aimed to strengthen the state's health security system and ensure readiness for any high-consequence disease outbreak. Accompanied by the hospital's Medical Director, Dr. Adejumo, Abayomi evaluated critical infrastructure and identified immediate maintenance needs in areas such as the Emergency Operations Center, biobank, and pharmacy.

Addressing these needs is crucial for maintaining biosafety standards and ensuring adequate patient care during public health emergencies.
