DDR Process Essential for Peace in Northwest Nigeria

On August 26, Col. Ahmed Usman (retd.), the Special Adviser on Security Matters to the Sokoto State Governor, emphasized the importance of the Disarmament, Demobilisation and Reintegration (DDR) process in addressing banditry and fostering sustainable peace in Northwest Nigeria. He commended the Zamfara State Government for establishing a 13-member State DDR, Peace and Security Committee aimed at combating banditry.

Usman noted that while military operations are necessary, they alone cannot achieve lasting peace. He advocated for a comprehensive approach that includes peacebuilding, rehabilitation, and reintegration for individuals who renounce violence.

Usman warned that the DDR process should not allow criminals to evade justice, insisting that those who continue to terrorize communities must face legal consequences. He welcomed the involvement of federal institutions such as the National Counter-Terrorism Centre and Operation SAFE CORRIDOR, which would provide necessary support for the committee's effectiveness.

Usman also acknowledged the contributions of international figures like Ambassador Sérgio Jaramillo and General Alberto Mejia.
