Sokoto Security Adviser Identifies Informants as Key Challenge

Col. Ahmed Usman (rtd), the Special Adviser to Governor Ahmed Aliyu of Sokoto State on Security Matters, stated that informants are a significant obstacle in the fight against banditry and insecurity in the state. He noted that criminal groups rely on local informants to plan attacks and evade security forces.

Since taking office, Governor Aliyu's administration has prioritized security, inheriting a poorly supported security structure. The government established the State Security Committee, chaired by Deputy Governor Engr. Idris Mohammed Gobir, to coordinate responses to emerging threats.

Significant investments have been made, including over N27.6 billion for operational support, which includes 200 Toyota Hilux vehicles, 250 motorcycles, and various security equipment. Recently, Governor Aliyu approved N1.7 billion for 1,000 Bajaj motorcycles to improve access to hard-to-reach areas.

Usman reported that these efforts have led to the rescue of 70 kidnapped individuals from January to the time of the interview.
