Peter Obi Urges INEC to Extend Voter Registration Period

Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress, has called on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to extend the ongoing Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise. He made this appeal in a statement on his official X handle, emphasizing the importance of allowing more eligible Nigerians, particularly young people, to register ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Obi argued that thousands of Nigerians turn 18 daily and become eligible to vote, and they should not be disenfranchised due to an early closure of the registration process. He referenced a Federal High Court judgment from November 22, 2022, in the case of Anaja Salmat & 3 Others v.

INEC, which ruled that voter registration should continue until 90 days before a general election. Obi acknowledged INEC's role in conducting credible elections and the need for adequate time to prepare a credible voters' register while advocating for a registration timeline that prioritizes expanding participation in the electoral process.
