Peter Obi Calls for Transparency in Candidate Credentials

Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), urged the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to publish the academic certificates of all candidates seeking election ahead of the 2027 general elections. In a statement made on Tuesday, Obi argued that making candidates' academic credentials public would promote transparency and strengthen public confidence in Nigeria's electoral process.

He emphasized the importance of upholding the highest standards of integrity for those seeking public office. Obi referenced a specific question in the INEC nomination form that asks whether candidates have ever been adjudged lunatic or declared unsound of mind, highlighting concerns about the current political leadership's soundness of mind amid Nigeria's worsening security and economic challenges.

He also pointed out the need for greater transparency in the electoral process, questioning why INEC should not ensure that leaders exemplify adherence to rules, thereby building public trust in democracy.
