Sultan of Sokoto Urges Religious Leaders to Combat Corruption

At a meeting of the Nigeria Inter-Religious Council (NIREC) in Abuja, the Sultan of Sokoto, Muhammadu Sa’ad Abubakar III, called on religious leaders to avoid protecting individuals accused of corruption due to personal or religious ties. He stated that law enforcement agencies should be allowed to investigate and prosecute anyone suspected of wrongdoing, regardless of their relationship with the accused.

The Sultan specifically admonished religious leaders against using their influence to shield alleged offenders, insisting that all individuals, including family and friends, must face legal consequences. He condemned the practice of using corrupt proceeds for religious activities, asserting that illicit wealth cannot justify good deeds.

Furthermore, he encouraged both Christians and Muslims to enhance mutual understanding and cooperation on national issues and urged religious leaders to pray for political leaders, including the President and members of the National Assembly, irrespective of their performance.
