David Mark Warns National Assembly Against Speaking for INEC on Electoral Act Amendment

Former Senate President David Mark has advised the National Assembly not to speak on behalf of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) regarding the Electoral Act Amendment. Mark stressed that the decision-making and implementation processes should remain the sole responsibility of INEC, especially concerning the feasibility of real-time electronic transmission of election results.

He made these remarks in Abuja during the unveiling of a book titled "The Burden of Legislation in Nigeria" authored by Senator Effiong Bob. Mark's comments come amidst sustained public debate over the National Assembly's handling of provisions related to electronic transmission of election results.

Senator Akpabio defended the amendment process, clarifying that the real-time transmission requirement is not yet concluded and is subject to further consideration by the bicameral legislative process. Akpabio highlighted concerns about weak telecommunications infrastructure and insecurity in parts of the country potentially invalidating election results transmitted in real-time.
