DSS Releases Sowore's Media Aide Zainab Sodiq After Detention

Zainab Sodiq, a media aide to Omoyele Sowore, was detained by the Department of State Services (DSS) for allegedly possessing a drone without the necessary end-user certification. Her detention occurred on July 6, 2026, at Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos as she prepared to travel to Abuja.

Following her detention, the International Press Institute (IPI) intervened, leading to her release at 7:30 PM on Friday. Malam Ahm Shekarau, the Secretary of IPI Nigeria, announced her release and commended the DSS for resolving the matter.

Musikilu Mojeed, President of IPI Nigeria, welcomed Sodiq's release and emphasized the importance of dialogue between security agencies and the media to ensure press freedom while addressing legitimate security concerns. The IPI reiterated its commitment to safeguarding press freedom and recognizing national security issues within the framework of human rights.
