DSS and NIA Investigate NFF for National Security Threats

The Department of State Services (DSS) and the Nigerian Intelligence Agency (NIA) are conducting an investigation into certain top officials of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) based on intelligence reports suggesting they are collaborating with foreign interests to undermine national security. A security source revealed that disturbing communications were intercepted between these NFF officials and foreign nationals.

The investigation is not linked to the N17 billion intervention fund approved by President Bola Tinubu in 2024 for clearing outstanding payments owed to Nigeria’s national teams, as financial improprieties fall under the jurisdiction of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC). The DSS focuses on domestic threats, while the NIA addresses external threats, indicating the seriousness of the investigation.

The NFF, led by Ibrahim Gusau, faces scrutiny from fans due to funding neglect, resulting in failures of the Super Eagles and Super Falcons in recent competitions. The NFF executive committee is under pressure to resign, with fears that the investigation may affect the scheduled board election on September 27 in Lafia, Nasarawa State.
