DSS to Appeal Life Sentences for Ansaru Terror Commanders

The Department of State Services (DSS) is set to appeal the life sentences handed down to two top commanders of the Ansaru terror organization, Mahmud Usman and Abu Bara, by the Federal High Court in Abuja, presided over by Justice Emeka Nwite. The commanders were sentenced to life imprisonment after pleading guilty to 32 counts of charges related to their involvement in the kidnapping and subsequent beheading of two teachers in Oriire, Oyo State.

The DSS considers the life sentences insufficient given the severity of the crimes committed. The two commanders had initially pleaded guilty but later attempted to change their pleas.

The DSS is advocating for a maximum penalty on behalf of the murdered teachers, emphasizing that the sentences do not adequately serve justice for the victims' families. The incident involved the kidnapping of teachers and pupils, with the Ansaru command holding them for nearly 60 days before releasing them under certain conditions.
