HURIWA Backs DSS Appeal Against Ansaru Commanders' Sentences

The Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria (HURIWA) has expressed support for the Department of State Services (DSS) in its appeal against the life sentences given to two senior commanders of the Ansaru terrorist group, Mahmud Usman (Abu Bara’a) and Abubakar Abba (Mahmud al-Nigeri). HURIWA, through its National Coordinator Comrade Emmanuel Nnadozie Onwubiko, criticized the sentences as insufficient given the severity of the crimes committed.

The commanders had pleaded guilty to a 32-count terrorism charge. HURIWA argued that the case represents a broader issue of justice for terrorism victims in Nigeria, including families and communities affected by violence.

The organization referenced DSS reports linking the convicts to recent kidnappings in Oyo State, where demands for their release were made. Former DSS Assistant Director Dennis Amachree identified the convicts as key figures in a network responsible for brutal attacks, including the execution of a teacher.

HURIWA called for a judicial review to ensure that the punishment reflects the seriousness of the offences and serves justice, accountability, and public safety.
