DSS Under Ajayi: A New Era of Human Rights Focus

Mr. Oluwatosin Adeola Ajayi was appointed as the Director-General of the Department of State Services (DSS) in August 2024, succeeding Alhaji Yusuf Bichi. His tenure has been characterized by significant operational shifts aimed at aligning the agency with democratic principles.

Ajayi has emphasized intelligence-led operations and has fostered stronger ties with civil society. Under his human rights reform policy, the DSS has publicly compensated at least 13 individuals who were victims of wrongful detention or operational errors.

Notably, a Sokoto-based trader received ₦20 million for being mistakenly shot during a 2016 raid, while an Abuja-based businesswoman received ₦10 million for wrongful arrest. Ajayi's leadership marks a departure from the DSS's previous reputation for human rights violations, as he seeks to ensure the agency operates within legal confines and collaborates with the public.

Additionally, Ajayi has faced criticism for donating to an Islamic school, reflecting the complex interplay of religion and politics in Nigeria.
