Fizdale Targets 2028 Olympic Gold for D’Tigers Basketball

David Fizdale, the newly appointed head coach of D’Tigers, has set an ambitious goal for the Nigerian men's basketball team to win a gold medal at the 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles. In an interview with ESPN, Fizdale stressed that merely qualifying for the Olympics is not sufficient; the team must aim for higher achievements on the global stage.

He called for a shift in mentality within the squad, urging players to adopt elite standards akin to those of perennial champions like the United States, which has won a record 17 Olympic gold medals. Fizdale acknowledged the challenges ahead but emphasized the importance of setting benchmarks for development, stating that immediate success cannot be guaranteed.

He expressed confidence in the current pool of players and highlighted the need for commitment to the program. Nigeria currently sits third in Group C of the 2027 FIBA Basketball World Cup African qualifiers, having faced inconsistent results in recent competitions.
