NBA Players Eye D’Tigers for 2028 Olympics Bid

Nigeria is intensifying its efforts to build a strong men's basketball team for the 2028 Olympics, with several NBA players indicating their readiness to represent D’Tigers. Coach David Fizdale, who previously led the Memphis Grizzlies and the New York Knicks, has been appointed to lead the national team from 2023 to 2025.

Journalist Kehind Bamidel reported that Aaron Nesmith, currently with the Indiana Pacers, has already pledged his allegiance ahead of the next international window. Desmond Bane, who plays for the Memphis Grizzlies, is also in the process of switching his international allegiance to Nigeria, encouraged by Bamidel.

Bane publicly expressed his desire to unite Nigerian eligible players for a serious Olympic run during a BBC interview in January 2026. Onyeka Okongwu of the Atlanta Hawks remains interested in playing for Nigeria, while Ayo Dosunmu is yet to make a final decision, although the coaching staff is eager to secure his commitment.

The Nigeria Basketball Federation (NBBF) has set clear targets for the team, aiming for a historic Olympic basketball medal.
