D’Tigress Falls to South Korea in World Cup Opener

In their opening Group B game of the 2026 FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup held in Berlin, Nigeria's D’Tigress faced a 99-81 defeat against South Korea. The match began positively for Nigeria, who opened with a 6-0 run.

However, South Korea quickly responded, leading 26-22 at the end of the first quarter. Nigeria narrowed the gap in the second quarter, edging it 23-22 and trailing by just three points at halftime, with South Korea leading 48-45.

Amy Okonkwo was instrumental in Nigeria's efforts, scoring 10 points in the third quarter, bringing the deficit down to one point at 59-58. Despite this, South Korea regained control, leading 68-62 at the end of the third quarter and ultimately outscoring Nigeria 31-19 in the final quarter.

Jihyun Park was the top scorer with 27 points. Nigeria's 20 turnovers were detrimental, while Okonkwo finished with 22 points, seven rebounds, and three assists.

D’Tigress will play Hungary next.
