CSOs Warn of Electoral Fraud from Dual Party Membership

Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) in Nigeria have issued a warning regarding the increasing issue of dual party membership, which they believe poses a significant threat to the country's democratic process. During a press briefing in Abuja, Dr.

Musa Ibrahim, the Executive Director of the group, described this trend as dangerous, highlighting that it creates loopholes that desperate politicians could exploit. Individuals secretly aligning with multiple political parties can secure unfair advantages during primary and general elections, undermining transparency and eroding public trust in the electoral system.

Dr. Ibrahim called on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to intensify its monitoring mechanisms and enforce stricter penalties against those who violate electoral laws, noting that the enforcement of party membership remains weak.

He urged political parties to strengthen their internal verification processes and maintain credible, updated membership registries to prevent abuse. The CSOs also appealed to the National Assembly to review existing electoral laws to close gaps that allow such practices to thrive, emphasizing the urgent need for reforms to safeguard electoral integrity.
