Ebonyi State Enforces Stricter Mining Regulations

The Ebonyi State Government has declared an end to weak regulatory oversight in the solid minerals sector, announcing stricter enforcement of mining laws. Mr.

Magnus Chinedu Nkah, the State Commissioner for Solid Minerals Development, made this announcement during a familiarization tour of quarry and mining sites in Ishielu and Ohaukwu Local Government Areas. The inspection aimed to assess compliance with mining laws, environmental standards, and the relationship between companies and host communities.

Nkah stated that mining companies must reclaim abandoned pits before vacating any site, highlighting the dangers posed by these pits. He also raised concerns about inadequate worker welfare and safety standards in some firms.

To enforce compliance, the ministry will issue templates and deadlines for operators and establish a task force to monitor activities and block revenue leakages. Nkah warned that transporting mineral resources at night remains illegal and pledged intensified enforcement against violators.
