ECOWAS Orders 25% Cut in Air Transport Charges from 2026 to Improve Regional Connectivity

The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has directed its member states to implement a 25% reduction in air transport charges from January 1, 2026, to tackle the high cost of air travel in the region. According to a study by the African Airline Association, West Africa has some of the highest air travel taxes and fees, with countries like Gabon, Sierra Leone, Nigeria, and others ranking among the top 10.

The decision aims to make air travel more affordable and boost the aviation market in the region, aligning with international aviation standards set by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO).
