NUJ Demands Prosecution of Thugs Attacking Journalists

The Ebonyi State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) condemned a recent attack on journalists covering a political event in Ikwuator Idembia, Ezza South Local Government Area. The incident, allegedly led by suspected political thugs including Barr.

Friday Agbom, involved an attempt to set ablaze a branded NUJ bus carrying journalists. Following a congress held on Monday at the Dr. Sam Egwu Press Centre in Abakaliki, the NUJ issued a communiqué demanding the immediate arrest and prosecution of the assailants.

The council stressed that the safety of journalists is crucial for democracy and urged the Ebonyi State Government and security agencies to take action. Additionally, the NUJ called on political parties to prevent harassment of journalists as political activities intensify ahead of the 2027 general elections, warning that continued attacks could lead to a boycott of the affected parties' events.

The congress also addressed development issues, commending Governor Francis Ogbonna Nwifuru for initiatives aimed at job creation and improving civil service morale.
