Police Assault Journalist During Demolition in Abuja

On Wednesday, during a demolition exercise at the Lugbe Federal Housing Estate in the Federal Capital Territory, Ogwu, the immediate past Group Business Editor of Daily Trust, was assaulted by police officers. While documenting what he believed to be a public function, Ogwu was confronted by the officers who seized his phone and ordered others to beat him.

He recounted on Facebook that he was severely beaten and later told he could leave, but his phone was not returned. Ogwu identified the police officers involved after seeing "Lugbe Police Station" marked on one of the pickup vans used in the operation.

He questioned the officers about the legality of their actions and stated that he did not need permission to cover the event. Despite his assertions, he was met with violence and intimidation, which he later documented and shared on social media.
