Edo Assembly Impeaches Suspended Speaker Blessing Agbebaku

On Monday, the Edo State House of Assembly formally impeached the suspended Speaker, Blessing Agbebaku, who represents Owan West Constituency 1. Agbebaku had previously resigned from his position on August 17, 2026, but the House clarified that he was impeached, not resigned.

Yekini Idaiye, the lawmaker representing Akoko-Edo 1, was elected as the new Speaker. The motion for impeachment was introduced by Majority Leader Sunny Ojiezele and seconded by Ahmed Waziri, the member representing Etsako Central.

The Speaker announced that Agbebaku must return all government property in his possession and warned that security agencies would be involved if he failed to comply. This formal impeachment occurred eight days after the controversy began, with the House converting Agbebaku’s resignation into an impeachment due to the lack of official documentation of his resignation following his suspension.
