Agbebaku Resigns as Edo Assembly Speaker for Personal Reasons

Blessing Sheriff Agbebaku, the immediate past Speaker of the Edo State House of Assembly, resigned from his position on August 17, 2026, during a plenary session. He stated that his resignation was for "personal reasons" and dismissed any claims of a breakdown in relationships with Assembly members.

Agbebaku, who represented Owan West Constituency and had been in office since June 2023, expressed that he maintained a cordial relationship with his colleagues throughout his tenure. He acknowledged that disagreements were normal due to differing political backgrounds but emphasized that this did not hinder the passage of people-oriented bills.

His decision to resign was made after careful consideration and was intended to promote peace in the state and his constituency. Following his resignation, Yekini Idaiye was elected as the new Speaker.

Agbebaku thanked Governor Monday Okpebholo for his support and urged his supporters to remain calm and avoid actions that could create tension.
