EFCC Interrogates El-Rufai Over 422 Billion Naira Fraud

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) is currently interrogating former Kaduna State Governor Mallam Nasiru El-Rufai regarding allegations of fraud totaling 422 billion Naira during his tenure from 2015 to 2023. El-Rufai is still in detention following his invitation by the EFCC, which was confirmed by his legal team.

This investigation follows a failed attempt to arrest Nnamdi Azikiwe at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja. El-Rufai was accompanied by hundreds of supporters to the EFCC headquarters in Abuja.

Sources within the commission have indicated that the investigation pertains to corruption allegations against El-Rufai's administration, although the duration of his detention remains unconfirmed. Ubong Akpan, El-Rufai's counsel, stated that the EFCC's actions infringe upon constitutional provisions guaranteeing fundamental freedoms.

Protests supporting El-Rufai occurred at the EFCC headquarters, with demonstrators chanting solidarity songs and demanding a thorough investigation. Muhammad Abdullahi, a spokesperson for the protest group, emphasized that the allegations against El-Rufai should not be trivialized as mere political drama.
