INEC Opens Portal for Guber and State Assembly Candidates

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has opened a portal for political parties to upload the names of their candidates for the governorship and state assembly elections. This exercise commenced on August 8, 2026, and will conclude on August 29, 2026.

INEC's Director of Voter Education and Publicity, Victoria Eta, confirmed the start of this process. So far, eight parties have collected access codes, but none have begun submissions.

Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) stated that the party is prepared for the next phase of the process. The ADC, led by David Mark, has already nominated candidates for 471 electoral positions ahead of the 2027 general elections.

This includes two presidential candidates, 109 senatorial candidates, and 360 House of Representatives candidates. The elections for the presidency and national assembly are scheduled for January 16, 2027, while the governorship and state assembly elections will take place on February 6, 2027.
