Aichat El-Rufai Sues ICPC for ₦2 Billion Defamation

Aichat El-Rufai, the wife of former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai, has initiated legal action against the Independent Corrupt Practices Commission (ICPC), seeking ₦2 billion in compensation for alleged defamation. The lawsuit follows a statement issued by the ICPC on May 18, 2026, which Aichat claims portrayed her in a negative light and caused her public ridicule.

Her legal representatives argue that the ICPC's statement, which referenced her as the wife of the former governor, was deliberately crafted to mislead the public and cast doubt on her marital status. The legal team contends that the ICPC's remarks regarding her husband’s conduct during a visit to their headquarters were unfounded and damaging.

They demand a retraction of the statement, a public apology across three national newspapers, and assurance that similar statements will not be made in the future. The ICPC has been given 14 days to comply with these demands before facing further legal action.
