Tensions Rise as Osun State Prepares for Gubernatorial Election

Osun State is set for a highly contentious gubernatorial election on Saturday, with Governor Ademola Adeleke running for reelection on the Accord Party platform against 14 other parties, notably the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the African Democratic Congress (ADC). The APC's candidate is Bola Oyebamiji, while Najeem Salam represents the ADC.

The political climate is charged, with Amnesty International reporting at least 29 individuals involved in 73 election-related violent incidents as of Tuesday. Tensions escalated when Senator Francis Fadahunsi of the APC urged his supporters to "kill" members of Adeleke's party.

The APC's National Campaign Council, led by Imo Governor Hope Uzodimma, has mobilized in Osogbo. The election is characterized as a "grudge match," with Adeleke previously defeating Oyetola in the 2022 rematch after losing to him in 2018.

The atmosphere is further complicated by reports of cash shortages in banks, raising concerns about the influence of money in the election.
