Otu Warns Traditional Rulers to Ensure Peace or Face Action

Governor Bassey Otu of Cross River State has issued a stern warning to traditional rulers, emphasizing their responsibility to maintain peace within their communities. During the annual International Leboku Festival in Ugep, represented by his Deputy, Dr Peter Odey, Otu condemned the recent inter-communal clashes between Ugep and Idomi that resulted in loss of lives and property.

He described the violence as a “show of shame” that marred the festival's purpose of fostering inter-communal harmony. Otu stated that any traditional ruler failing to ensure peace would have their certificates of recognition revoked.

He also mentioned that the government would not acknowledge parallel leadership structures until communities unite behind a single representative. Chief Inyang Yibala Igri, Chairman of Yakurr Local Government Area, called for peace and unity, urging communities to prioritize development.

HRM Obol Ufem Ubana, the Traditional Ruler of Yakurr, assured efforts to sustain communal peace but raised concerns over dual coronations causing tension in Agoi-Ibami.
