Desailly Slams Sanchez as Chelsea Eyes Martinez Deal

Chelsea legend Marcel Desailly has criticized goalkeeper Robert Sanchez, labeling him "awful" after Sanchez's mistakes contributed to Chelsea's 3-2 victory over Fulham in their opening match of the Premier League season. Sanchez, who was signed from Brighton for £25 million three years ago, failed to handle both of Fulham's goals effectively.

In response to Sanchez's performance, Chelsea is reportedly finalizing a £7.5 million deal to sign Emiliano Martinez from Aston Villa, marking the fourth transaction between the two clubs this summer. Martinez, 33, is expected to sign a two-year contract at Stamford Bridge with an option for an additional year.

Desailly expressed concern over Sanchez's role in goal, stating that such weaknesses should not be evident so early in the season. Sanchez was omitted from the squad for Chelsea's subsequent Carabao Cup match against Luton Town, where Mike Penders started in goal.

Chelsea secured a 2-0 victory in that match.
