Cybercrime Suspect Dies in EFCC Gun Battle in Makurdi

Asar Sesugh, a suspect in cybercrime, died after engaging in a gun battle with operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) in Makurdi, Benue State. The incident occurred on May 21, 2026, when EFCC operatives attempted to apprehend him following his escape from custody on May 4, 2026.

Sesugh was among 26 suspects arrested in an operation led by the EFCC's Makurdi zonal director. After his escape, efforts to re-arrest him were unsuccessful until fresh intelligence indicated his location.

During the operation, associates of Sesugh allegedly opened fire, prompting the EFCC operatives to return fire in self-defense. Following the exchange, Sesugh was found with a pool of blood on the roadside and was taken to a police cottage hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The EFCC clarified that he was not in custody at the time of his death and expressed condolences to his family while emphasizing their commitment to national security.
