Lawyer Demands Probe into EFCC-Linked Death of Teen

Human rights lawyer Marshal Abubakar has called for an independent investigation into the death of 16-year-old Atsar Sesugh in Makurdi, Benue State. Abubakar's demand follows conflicting accounts from the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and police regarding the circumstances of Sesugh's death.

The EFCC had previously arrested Sesugh on April 28, along with 26 others, for alleged internet fraud activities. On May 4, after escaping detention, he was reportedly shot during an encounter with EFCC officers.

Eyewitness accounts and the victim's family dispute the official narrative, with Sesugh's mother, Jennif Atsar, accusing EFCC officials of demanding a bribe for the return of her son's confiscated mobile phone. The EFCC maintains that Sesugh was not in their custody at the time of his death.

Abubakar argues that an independent inquiry is necessary to restore public trust in law enforcement agencies.
